Anyone have any luck getting Halo 2 to work? I get the following error when I try to install it on 32-bit Windows 7:
The ordinal 125 could not be located in the dynamic link library dwmapi.dll.
Looks like someone coded with the assumption that the DWM API DLL would not change AT ALL between Vista and future versions of Windows.
Any ideas?
<rant> Sometimes I don't understand how Microsoft* can have paid programmers put out products with such problems and Linux comes along coded by people who aren't being paid, and I have far fewer problems with it (and open source software in general). </rant>
* - Yeah I know it's Bungie, but I have a feeling it's not the Bungie guys who woke up one day and said 'Hey, let's make the PC port not work on XP!' which caused game sales to be quite poor for a Halo game, as I understand it.
[Edit : Ack I think I got it, whichever genius made the Halo 2 XP hack (which I use) made it put the files in the Halo 2 game directory, including a hacked dwmapi.dll. That's probably causing the error. Dunno why I didn't notice it before.]

Overview of Dwmapi.dll
What Is Dwmapi.dll?
Dwmapi.dll is a type of DLL file associated with Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 developed by Microsoft for the Windows Operating System. The latest known version of Dwmapi.dll is 1.0.0.0, which was produced for Windows. This DLL file carries a popularity rating of 1 stars and a security rating of 'UNKNOWN'.
What Are DLL Files?
DLL ('dynamic link library') files such as dwmapi.dll are small programs, similar to EXE ('executable') files, which allow multiple software programs to share the same functionality (eg. printing).
For example, let's say you are running Windows and editing a document in Microsoft Word. The DLL file that controls printing does not need to load unless it's function is needed - eg. you decide to print your document. When you select 'Print', Microsoft Word calls the printer DLL file, and it is loaded into memory (RAM) at that time. If you want to print a document in another program, Adobe Acrobat for example, that same printer DLL file will be used as well.
Why Do I Have DLL Errors?
Because they are shared files, DLL files exist outside of the software application itself. Although this provides many benefits for software developers, this separation also provides an opportunity for problems to occur.
Quite simply, if Windows cannot properly load your dwmapi.dll file, you will encounter an error message. Please see 'Causes of dwmapi.dll Errors' below for more information.
When Do DLL Errors Occur?
DLL errors, such as those associated with dwmapi.dll, most often occur during computer startup, program startup, or while trying to use a specific function in your program (eg. printing).
Common Dwmapi.dll Error Messages
The most common dwmapi.dll errors that can appear on a Windows-based computer are:
- 'Dwmapi.dll not found.'
- 'The file dwmapi.dll is missing.'
- 'Dwmapi.dll Access Violation.'
- 'Cannot register dwmapi.dll.'
- 'Cannot find C:WindowsSystem32dwmapi.dll.'
- 'Cannot start Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1. A required component is missing: dwmapi.dll. Please install Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 again.'
- 'This application failed to start because dwmapi.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.'
These DLL error messages can appear during program installation, while a dwmapi.dll-related software program (eg. Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1) is running, during Windows startup or shutdown, or even during the installation of the Windows operating system. Keeping track of when and where your dwmapi.dll error occurs is a critical piece of information in troubleshooting the problem.
